On the Windows Vista blog, General Manager Mike Nash said that the next version of Windows would retain its Windows 7 code-name when it is released to the market.
Nash notes that while Microsoft has used codenames during final product releases in the past, he believes this to be a first for Windows. Nash admits that, since this would be the seventh incarnation of the NT kernel, Windows 7 just makes sense as a product title.
"For me, one of the most exciting times in the release of a new product is right before we show it to the world for the first time," Nash wrote.
He further added saying that Microsoft will be revealing more details about Windows 7 at the Professional Developers Conference at the end of October, and the WinHEC in the beginning of November. Developers will even be able to take home a pre-beta test version of the system.
This implies that a full release is coming in 2009, which would give Windows 7 a relatively short development cycle for Microsoft. Vista was released worldwide at the beginning of 2007, more than five years after its previous version, Windows XP. |
