Japanese imaging firm, Canon is planning to build a factory in Kawasaki prefecture in Japan for CMOS image sensors at a cost of 55 billion yen to double its production capacity and meet rising demand for single-lens reflex cameras.
According to media reports, this initiative will help Canon to consolidate its position as the world's leading digital camera maker.
CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors convert light into electronic signals to form images.
The new factory will come with an R&D facility and is scheduled to come on stream in July 2008.
It will be able to produce enough CMOS sensors to make roughly 3 million SLR cameras, almost the same as Canon's only existing CMOS factory in Ayase, Kanagawa Prefecture.
